Sodium bicarbonate is the alkaline salt sold as baking soda and, in sterile 8.4% form, as an intravenous drug for metabolic acidosis. In peptide preparation it plays the opposite role to acetic acid: a few drops of the 8.4% injection are added to raise the pH of a solution that is too acidic, most often unbuffered NAD+, and to reduce the sting of an acidic injection. That second use has a licensed precedent, because an 8.4% sodium bicarbonate product is FDA-labelled specifically to be added to lidocaine so the injection hurts less, but no bicarbonate product is labelled for use with peptides, and the forum practice of titrating it by pH strip is a community method with known pitfalls.
